Speaking in an interview with NTV, McCarthy was unwavering in his belief that the Qatar-based forward remains the best option to lead Kenya’s frontline until a better alternative emerges.
"Michael is one of the best finishers we have in Kenya. I know he receives a lot of negative reviews from people, but if you train with a player like that, then you truly understand his value," McCarthy said.
The South African tactician, who boasts experience both as a top-level player and coach, highlighted the exceptional talent Olunga brings to the team.
"For someone who has played and coached at the highest level, it's rare to find a player like Michael. We have that player in our team, so of course, he’ll always be a priority. Other players will have to prove why they deserve to take his place,” he added.
McCarthy's firm stance underscores his confidence in Olunga’s ability to continue leading the Harambee Stars as they build toward upcoming international assignments.
